Donald Trump challenged his inner beauty queen to help crown the newly appointed Miss USA, Nana Meriwether, in New York on Wednesday (January 9). Meriwether, who was first runner-up at the 2012 competition, is taking over the duties after the former winner, Olivia Culpo, was named Miss Universe. It's pretty unique. I don't know, I don't think any Miss USA's have been crowned by Trump. So it's pretty neat. And I'm a middle child, I never get this attention, it's a very crazy day for me," said Meriwether who is representing the state of Maryland. The 27-year-old beauty, who was born in South Africa, posed for pictures with her parents after officially being crowned. After the unorthodox crowning ceremony Trump had nothing but praise for Meriwether. "It's just a great time and she's a fabulous person as you know. Nana Meriwether, who is a great athlete, a great student and she's going to be a great Miss USA," Trump told Reuters. This is the first time since 1997 that a Miss USA has won the Miss Universe title. Culpo, who is originally from Rhode Island and a college sophomore, said her parents initially didn't want her to compete in pageants, but now are in shock over her wins. "My first pageant was 15 months ago. So to be Miss Universe, honestly it's a little ridiculous to say to myself. But they are very proud and are happy that I did do what I wanted to do despite the fact that they didn't think it was a good idea at the time," explained Culpo. A new Miss USA will be crowned in June in Las Vegas.

Nana Meriwether was officially crowned Miss USA 2012 during a brief ceremony at Trump Towers in New York City.

With Olivia Culpo winning the Miss Universe 2012 tittle, Maryland’s Nana Meriwether will become the new Miss USA 2012! She will crown her successor at the end of Miss USA 2013 beauty pageant.

Meriwether, 27, was the first runner-up to Culpo at the Miss USA 2012 pageant held last June. With the tittle, Meriwether has made history – becoming the first African American with South African roots to be crowned Miss USA.
Formally Miss Maryland USA, Meriwether was raised in Potomac, Maryland and is an accomplished student and athlete. She began her early years attending Sidwell Friends School, best known as the current and former school of the Obama daughters and Chelsea Clinton. She went on to become a star athlete for the UCLA Women’s Volleyball Team helping lead the squad to the NCAA Final Four during her senior year. Along the way, she broke three NCAA volleyball records, was a two-time All American, was featured in Sports Illustrated, and graduated with a degree in Political Science. She went on to complete her post graduate premedical science studies at USC in 2011 and soon after clinched the title of Miss Maryland USA.

“Being named Miss USA is a dream come true for me,” said newly crowned Miss USA Nana Meriwether. “I am looking forward to this amazing opportunity and hope to use this title to raise awareness for my non-profit The Meriwether Foundation, which focuses on improving the health and well-being of rural villages in five countries in Southern Africa.”

Nana Meriwether (born May 24, 1985) is an American beauty pageant titleholder. Meriwether was selected as Miss Maryland USA for 2012, and was first runner-up in the Miss USA 2012 pageant. With the ascension of Olivia Culpo to the Miss Universe 2012 crown on December 19, 2012, Meriwether assumed the title of Miss USA.

Meriwether is the Second titleholder form Maryland to crown Miss USA title.

Born in South Africa while her parents were doing volunteer work, she was raised in Potomac, Maryland and is a 2003 graduate of Sidwell Friends School. She attended Duke University for one semester, where her father Delano Meriwether had been the first African-American medical student. She transferred to UCLA in 2004, where she graduated and was twice-named an All-American in volleyball. She then started graduate school at USC. She previously participated in California pageants (2008-2011), and finished as high as second.
